The Crescent Arts Centre has won three prestigious awards from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors at the RICS awards Northern Ireland 2011.

The highly successful refurbishment and extension of this diverse community arts centre resulted in the centre winning the Community Benefit category, being “Highly Commended” in the category of Building Conservation as well as winning the impressive “Project of the Year 2011” award at the ceremony in Lisburn on 17 May 2011.

As one of the Northern Ireland category winners, the Crescent Arts Centre will also go forward to the RICS Awards in London to compete against projects from across the UK and internationally in October 2011.

Chairman Dr David Hill paid tribute to all involved in the project, “The refurbishment of the Crescent Arts Centre has been an overwhelming success and would not have been possible without the substantial investment from our main capital funders Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL), Arts Council of Northern Ireland (ACNI), Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA), Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and two trusts Ulster Garden Villages and BIFFAwards along with the many donations from members of the public.

“The awards reflect the hard work of a great number of people, from the Design Team headed by Hamilton Architects, Gilbert Ash (Contractor), Kieran Mooney (Project Sponsor), Tom Kernaghan and Noel Mathers Project Managers (Edmond Shipway Construction Consultants) to the Crescent’s own Board, Management and staff.”

Roisin McDonough, Chief Executive, Arts Council of Northern Ireland, commented:

“We are delighted that the Crescent Arts Centre has received these prestigious awards, which recognise the contribution this superb venue makes to our cultural and economic life.

“The Arts Council invested £1.45 million in the new centre as part of a wider government strategy to bring venues here up to an international standard. To be nominated for this award is testament to the efforts of all those involved in the Crescent Arts capital project and the team should be very proud. ”

Dr Keith Acheson, centre Manager stated “The success at this year’s RICS Awards, especially in the Community Benefit category perfectly highlights the ethos of the centre. Opportunities at the Design Stage were given to the many user groups so that they could influence decisions. This tangible sense of ownership, we feel, has positively impacted upon visitor numbers, audiences, class enrolments and the many community groups, professional artists and businesses that use the space for concerts, rehearsals, meetings or even to just have a coffee!”

This year has been an incredible success for the centre, as it has won a total of 5 awards that include a UNESCO “Man and the Built Environment” award and the William Keown Trust Prestige Award for Accessibility since its re-opening in April 2010.

Project Summary

The Crescent Arts Centre has undertaken a £7.2 million redevelopment of its buildings, funded by Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure, Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Heritage Lottery Fund, Northern Ireland Environment Agency – and the numerous kind donations from individual supporters.

As part of this redevelopment the Crescent Arts Centre wishes to commission an artist or artists to create a piece or pieces of art for what is a landmark building. This artwork is likely to consist of independent, stand-alone pieces.

Crescent Arts Centre Background

The Crescent Arts Centre is a diverse community arts centre, situated in South Belfast, which has served the population of the city and beyond with a wide range of arts and cultural activities for almost 30 years. The Crescent building is a four storey listed building located at 2 – 4 University Road, built originally in 1873 for Victoria College.

The neutral location of the building, within the Queen’s Quarter but also close to the communities of Lower Ormeau, Donegall Pass, Sandy Row and Donegall Road, and on several bus routes and close to Botanic Rail Station, encourages visitors and attendance from all communities, and has provided excellent opportunities for cross-community work. Through funding from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Belfast City Council, the wide-ranging programme has been a key and critical provider of culturally diverse activities throughout the centre’s existence. Many of those attending classes and workshops in the Crescent had their first encounter with a particular art form in the centre.

The educational arts programme of classes offered by the Crescent embraces many forms of dance and movement, visual arts, creative writing, music of all kinds, theatre, drama, crafts and hosts an extensive programme of activities and workshops for young people. As a venue the Crescent Arts Centre has been a vital part of the arts infrastructure in the city playing host to public performances of modern dance, music concerts, theatre, readings, circus and much, much more.

The outreach programme has developed and grown, embracing new arts and cultural developments and creating new partnerships enabling our large bank of professional tutors to work with all ages and ranges of ability in all areas of the city.

The Crescent runs two key festivals, ‘Between the Lines Literary Festival’ and ‘Citydance’. These festivals help raise the profile of the centre as do the number of carefully selected residents who occupy office space in an appropriate cultural environment.

The Crescent also hires space, for appropriate activities, to accredited arts and cultural organisations and individuals.

After re-opening in April 2010, the Crescent has two flexible performance spaces which can act separately or together, a café, dedicated gallery space with three exhibition spaces, purpose-built dance studio, art studio, photographic and dark room, office suites for leasing and flexible workshop spaces. Through the addition of two lifts the building will be fully accessible so that all members of the community can avail of all that will be on offer. Through the generous support of our major capital project funders the life of the Crescent has been secured for generations to come.

To get an impression of the refurbishment work, please have a look at some photos taken during the process of the refurbishment here

Helen, who was awarded an MBE for her contribution to the development of contemporary dance in Northern Ireland, had a long association with the Crescent Arts Centre, as a dancer, choreographer, teacher and friend.

Born in Czechoslovakia in 1916, she was influenced by leading figures in European dance, most notably Rudolf Laban and Mary Wigman. In Prague, she studied with Laban’s pupil, Milca Mayerová, with whom she danced until the outbreak of the Second World War.

In her memoir A Time To Speak, Helen writes of her experiences from 1942—45 when she endured the Nazi concentration camps: Theresienstadt, Auschwitz and Stutthof, and lost her husband and mother.

After the war, Helen emigrated to Belfast in 1947, where she settled with her husband Harry and her sons, Michael and Robin.

In 1956 Helen choreographed for the Belfast Ballet Club and was later a founder member of the Belfast Modern Dance Group featured in a BBC Television series in 1967.

Helen also had a long association with the Lyric Theatre which continued until the mid-1970s where she choreographed many works in collaboration with the acclaimed theatre director Sam McCready, former artistic director of the Lyric.

Moore Sinnerton directed an hour-long documentary on Helen’s life and work as did the presenter Joan Bakewell in a BBC documentary ( A short interview with Helen can be viewed on Youtube).

Helen will be remembered not only for her extraordinary contribution to the cultural life of Northern Ireland but for her artistic passion, warm personality and profound humanity.

We send our sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy to her family, friends and the many acquaintances whose lives she touched.

“Through dance people can come together who wouldn’t have come together in other circumstances”. (Helen Lewis)
