 Monday 19th and Tuesday 20th July 2010.

The Kodály Society of Northern Ireland (KSONI) are delighted to welcome back to Belfast Hungarian Master Teachers Ildiko Herboly Kocsar and Sarolta Platthy who have wowed participants at our previous courses at the Ulster College of Music and Queens University Belfast Music Dept.
The course is designed as a top-up for participants who have completed some Kodály study and as a taster for those who would like to know what the Kodály method is about and how it can help in their teaching, conducting or personal musicianship.
This course is designed for those interested in:
  • Brushing up their Musicianship/Sight reading skills
  • Choral Singing
  • Taking part in Choral Conducting Master-classes
  • Revitalising their own teaching methods
  • And learning more about the world-renowned Kodály method of Music Education

The Kodály Method
Who was Kodály?
Zoltán Kodály (1882-1967) was a Hungarian composer, educator and philosopher. His innovative, child centred approach to music education was inspired by his belief that:
“To teach a child an instrument without first giving him preparatory training.. is to build upon sand”
What is special about the Kodály Method?
Kodály training is based on teaching, learning and understanding music through the experience of singing. By using a country’s own folksongs, students learn to experience music directly without the technical hindrance of an instrument. Students learn through singing games, rhythm games, round, percussion, hand signs and tonic sol-fa.
Why singing?
The singing voice is nature’s in-built musical instrument. Kodály educators believe it is the birthright of every child to learn how to express him/herself musically through the singing voice

Melody is a short story of lunch breaks and the possibility of romance and adventure at so simple a location as a bench in a city park. Mr Kane is a bachelor in his mid-forties. Kathleen is a widow. She is fastidious and cultured – he is clumsy, but gentle. Over a series of short scenes, they delicately advance their relationship. There are hints that something may be amiss, but only hints. And then catastrophe! The real world intrudes upon the idyll of their park bench – neither is quite who they seemed. The truth shatters their illusions of each other and, perhaps, the possibility of romance.

The Lurig Drama Group has scooped the awards of Best Director (Nuala Connolly) , Best Actress (Rosaleen Agnew) and Best Actor (Pauric Dunne) for their excellent performances, and will represent Northern Ireland in the Regional One-Act Drama Festival in Scotland in June.
Competition will be intense, there will be over 200 festivals in England, Scotland and Wales to determine Lurig Drama Group’s opposition in the final.

Belfast City Council’s new ‘Electronic Crèche’ is opening in the newly refurbished Crescent Arts Centre from 1pm – 4pm every Sunday, from 25 April.

Part of the Sunday in the City programme, organised by the council in partnership with trans, the Electronic Crèche will offer the chance to relax to the sounds of the best Belfast DJs, to catch up with friends old and new, browse the Sunday papers – and even take advantage of the wi-fi and Nintendo Wii on offer – all for free.

Sunday In The City has been proving a huge hit with shoppers, culture vultures and those just looking for a weekend chillout, with a mix of old favourites and new experiences designed to appeal to all ages and tastes, from music and circus, to theatre and tours, and markets to art exhibitions.

The Festival will offer lunchtime and evening recitals, free taster workshops and guided tours of the building.

Events include a reading with Pulitzer Prize winning author and new patron of the Crescent Arts Centre Paul Muldoon, Bellydance, Puppetry, Figure Drawing or Lego workshops, an afternoon with Shakespeare and lots more workshops and performances by local and international artists.
